Every time I set foot on the Portuguese island of Madeira, I know I am in for something special. This Atlantic gem, with its year-round subtropical climate and dramatic volcanic landscapes, has been a favourite of mine for years. After spending an incredible week exploring this enchanting island, I can confidently say it didn’t fail to amaze once again.
A Perfect Base: Porto Mare Hotel
My family and I were fortunate to stay at the Porto Mare Hotel, beautifully positioned on Funchal’s Lido waterfront. This splendid property forms part of a sprawling, lush green resort complex that also features the Eden Mare Hotel and the Residence. From the moment we arrived, the hotel’s impeccable maintenance standards were evident, whilst the staff’s friendly and attentive service made us feel genuinely welcomed.
The Porto Mare’s facilities are outstanding, offering everything needed for a comfortable and luxurious stay. What truly sets this location apart, however, is its prime position with easy access to the Madeira Lido. The waterfront promenade became our daily ritual. A leisurely stroll past excellent value bars and restaurants, each offering quality dining experiences that cater to every budget imaginable. The variety of culinary options in and around the Lido area is remarkable.
One particular gem that I must highlight is O Dragoeiro Restaurant, recommended by Experience the World Travel client Naz, who visits the island annually. Her recommendation proved absolutely spot-on. The restaurant offers exceptional value with fixed-price three-course menus at either €23 or €36 – remarkable quality for such reasonable prices. Indeed, throughout our entire stay, we found drinks to be reasonably priced wherever we ventured on the island.
Exploring Madeira’s Stunning Coastline
Our private island tour became the highlight of our trip, thanks to our excellent guide David, who expertly navigated us through the breathtaking sites of the West and North coasts. Our first stop was Cabo Girão, where we experienced one of Madeira’s most thrilling attractions – the spectacular skywalk. Standing on this glass platform, suspended 580 metres above sea level, offers wonderful views not just of the horizon, but directly beneath your feet to the terraced fields and ocean below. It’s both exhilarating and humbling simultaneously.
The tour continued to Porto Moniz, a wonderful fishing village famous for its amazing natural rock pools carved from volcanic rock. We were incredibly fortunate to visit during a music festival, which created a real buzz throughout the village. Food and drink stalls, along with local craft vendors, lined the main street, creating an atmosphere of celebration that perfectly captured the island’s spirit.
We explored Ribeira Brava, a charming inland town that showcases traditional Madeiran architecture and culture. The journey then took us to Paul da Serra, a spectacular plateau that feels almost otherworldly with its unique landscape and endemic flora. At Seixal, we witnessed the magnificent “Véu da Noiva” (Bridal Veil) waterfall cascading down the cliff face. A sight that photographs simply cannot capture adequately. (As Ronnie had to do!)

Our final coastal stop was Câmara de Lobos, the picturesque fishing village made famous by Sir Winston Churchill. The former Prime Minister is celebrated throughout this charming bay for his paintings of the wonderful harbour. Walking through the village, you’ll discover an amazing urban art display created using recycled products that cascade through the narrow streets, adding contemporary flair to this historic location.
Funchal’s Cultural Treasures
No trip to Funchal would be complete without visiting the vibrant Mercado dos Lavradores. This bustling market offers an authentic glimpse into local life, where you can purchase locally made crafts and marvel at the incredible variety of locally grown tropical fruits and aromatic spices. The colours and fragrances create a sensory experience that epitomises Madeira’s agricultural richness.
Equally important for any Funchal experience is exploring the wonderful restaurants nestled throughout the old town’s streets. These culinary gems sit amongst the amazing artwork adorning doors and walls of historic buildings, creating an atmosphere where gastronomy meets art. My standout recommendation is Lá ao Fundo, which offers a truly amazing twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine by incorporating Middle Eastern flavours – an innovative fusion that works brilliantly.
For those celebrating special occasions, particularly romantic milestones, I highly recommend Forte de São Tiago. This historic fortress offers the unique opportunity to tour Funchal in a classic vintage car before enjoying a romantic dinner with stunning harbour views. It’s an experience that combines history, luxury, and romance in the most memorable way.
Adventures Beyond the Ordinary
Adventure seekers shouldn’t miss the cable car journey to the hilltop village of Monte. The views during the ascent are spectacular, showcasing Funchal’s amphitheatre-like setting against the Atlantic Ocean. For the truly brave, the famous Toboggan sledges offer an exhilarating descent back down the steep streets. A tradition dating back to the 19th century that remains as thrilling today as ever.
Marine life enthusiasts will find dolphin and whale watching boat trips from Funchal port absolutely captivating. The waters surrounding Madeira are home to numerous whales and dolphins, making sightings highly likely. And if you happen to be unlucky, you can take the trip again for free!
The Island’s Natural Glory
Whilst there’s certainly no shortage of activities and attractions in Madeira, one of the island’s greatest pleasures is simply admiring the incredible natural beauty that surrounds you everywhere. The amazing greenery and colourful flowers maintain their bloom throughout the entire year, thanks to the island’s perfect climate. From the dramatic laurel forests of the interior to the exotic gardens of Funchal, Madeira is truly a botanical paradise.
This island offers something magical for every type of traveller – adventure seekers, food enthusiasts, culture lovers, and those simply seeking relaxation in stunning surroundings. My week in Madeira has left me with memories I’ll treasure forever, and I’m already planning my return visit to this Atlantic jewel sometime in the future.
