Several years ago, cruising found a special place in my heart, but nothing prepared me for the extraordinary adventure that awaited aboard the MSC World Europa. As someone who’s dedicated her career to helping others experience the world’s best holidays, I can confidently say this cruise ranked high.

Setting Sail from Marseille

Our journey began in the port city of Marseille, where the MSC World Europa stood majestically against the French Riviera backdrop.

Marseille itself proved to be a delightful surprise! The city offers incredible historical treasures and food as good as you’ll find anywhere in the Mediterranean. If you have time before embarking, visiting the stunning Frioul Islands is essential. These pristine islands just off the coast provide breathtaking views back to the mainland and offer a peaceful escape from the bustling city.

From the moment I stepped aboard, it was clear this wasn’t just any cruise ship – this was a floating city designed to deliver world-class experiences at every turn.

I’d opted for a balcony cabin, and what a wise decision that proved to be. There’s something utterly magical about awakening to endless Mediterranean vistas, watching the sunrise paint the sea in brilliant hues whilst enjoying my morning tea in complete privacy. The cabin itself was beautifully appointed, offering the perfect sanctuary between our exciting port adventures.

Genoa and the Jewel of Portofino

Our first port of call was Genoa, but the real treasure lay in the excursion to Portofino. The journey itself was part of the magic – we first stopped in the charming fishing village of Camogli, where terracotta and pastel-coloured houses line the waterfront. From here, we boarded a ferry that carried us along the dramatic coastline to Portofino itself.

I was particularly excited about this visit because Portofino holds a special place in my heart – it’s the birthplace of one of my absolute favourite singers, Jack Savoretti. The timing could have been better, as Jack had been visiting his hometown just the week before our arrival! Still, walking through the same cobbled streets where he grew up, admiring the same stunning harbour views, I can see what inspired his fantastic music.

This picture-perfect fishing village, with its rainbow-coloured houses cascading down to a pristine harbour, truly felt like stepping into a living postcard. The Italian Riviera revealed its full splendour here, and I found myself completely enchanted by the timeless elegance of this coastal gem. Every corner seemed to whisper stories of the artists, writers, and musicians who’ve found inspiration in this magical place.

Naples: Discovering Hidden Spanish Heritage

In the 16th century, when Spain ruled southern Italy, they built an entire district to house Spanish soldiers and officials. Today, the Quartieri Spagnoli still buzzes with that same vibrant energy, its narrow streets filled with washing lines, bustling markets, and the most incredible street art. It’s a proper slice of authentic Neapolitan life that feels worlds away from the tourist trail. The passionate spirit of Naples hits you like a wave here – locals chatting from their balconies, children playing football in tiny squares, and the most amazing aromas wafting from family-run trattorias. I absolutely loved getting lost in these maze-like streets!

Sicily’s Dual Delights: Taormina and Giardini Naxos

Sicily offered a perfect blend of culture and relaxation. Taormina, perched dramatically on its hillside, offered breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the sparkling Ionian Sea. The ancient Greek theatre, still hosting performances after millennia, reminded me why Sicily remains one of the Mediterranean’s most captivating destinations.

Honestly, a couple of hours in Taormina wasn’t enough – I could have spent days wandering its medieval streets, exploring the charming boutiques, and soaking up the incredible atmosphere. But that’s the absolute beauty of cruising, isn’t it? You get these tantalising glimpses of magical places that inspire you to return someday for a proper, extended holiday. Taormina has definitely earned its place on my “must return to” list!

But it was the afternoon spent on the beach at Giardini Naxos that truly rejuvenated my soul. Sometimes, the simplest pleasures – warm sand, crystal-clear waters, and uninterrupted relaxation – prove the most memorable.

Malta’s Valletta: A Living Museum

Arriving in Valletta is simply breathtaking – arguably one of the world’s most historic and beautiful ports. As I opened my balcony doors that morning, I was greeted by the most spectacular sight: majestic city walls rising on both sides of the ship, their honey-coloured limestone glowing in the Mediterranean sun. The rich heritage of this incredible fortress city literally surrounds you as you sail into the Grand Harbour, making you feel like you’re arriving at the very heart of maritime history.

Valletta exceeds every expectation. This UNESCO World Heritage city is an architectural marvel, and our walking tour revealed layer upon layer of fascinating history. The highlight came during our well-deserved refreshment break on St. Ursula Street and St. John Street, where charming bars and restaurants nestled amongst the characteristic stepped streets. These atmospheric venues, carved into the ancient limestone, provided the perfect setting to absorb the unique ambience of Malta’s capital whilst enjoying local hospitality at its finest.

Barcelona: The Perfect Finale

Our final port, Barcelona, delivered a spectacular conclusion to our Mediterranean adventure. The city tour encompassed everything from the bustling marina to the golden beaches, showcasing why Barcelona remains one of Europe’s most beloved destinations.

What makes Barcelona truly special as a city holiday destination is its incredible ability to offer the best of both worlds. You can immerse yourself in vibrant city life – exploring Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces, wandering through the atmospheric Gothic Quarter, or enjoying the buzzing tapas scene – then simply hop on the metro, or take a 20-minute stroll and find yourself on stunning beaches that stretch for kilometres along the Mediterranean coast. It’s this unique combination of rich culture and seaside relaxation that sets Barcelona apart from other European capitals.

The seamless blend of historic charm and contemporary vibrancy makes this Catalonian capital utterly irresistible. Whether you’re seeking world-class museums and incredible cuisine or want to soak up the sun on those magnificent beaches, Barcelona delivers it all with a distinctly Spanish flair that’s absolutely captivating.

Culinary Excellence at Sea

The dining experiences aboard MSC World Europa deserve special mention. At Butcher’s Cut, I savoured some of the finest steak meals I’ve ever encountered at sea – perfectly prepared, expertly seasoned, and beautifully presented. The Garden Kitchen transported me to Scandinavia with its innovative Nordic-inspired cuisine, whilst the Teppanyaki restaurant provided an entertaining and delicious Japanese culinary spectacle.

Having pre-booked the drinks package proved incredibly wise, allowing me to sample the ship’s impressive beverage offerings without restraint!

Evening Entertainment Extraordinaire

The evening entertainment programme was nothing short of spectacular. The Bruno Mars tribute show had everyone up out of their seats dancing, capturing the superstar’s energy and charisma perfectly. However, it was Swedish performer Heidi Karlsson who truly stole my heart with her captivating presence and extraordinary talent. She sang ABBA classics to a rendition of Parvaroti’s Nessen Dorma that had the Italians in tears!

The Art of Choice: Too Many Wonderful Options

One of the most delightful challenges aboard MSC World Europa was choosing between the numerous exceptional venues. The Champagne bar offered refined elegance, the Elixir cocktail lounge provided sophisticated mixology, and the British Pub – complete with its own brewery and gin distillery – delivered authentic pub charm at sea.

But the crown jewel was undoubtedly the Speakeasy, accessed through a delightfully traditional red British telephone box. This hidden gem transported guests back to the prohibition era with its intimate atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails.

Keep watching our socials to learn how you can get access and how they got me hook, line, and sinker!
