Following the Experience The World Travel team’s attendance at a recent Antigua tourism workshop, we’d like to share why this stunning Caribbean island should be on your must-visit list. Antigua truly deserves its reputation as one of the region’s most diverse and welcoming destinations. With 365 beaches, quite literally one for every day of the year, and an impressive array of luxury resorts scattered across its varied coastline, this 108-square-mile paradise offers experiences ranging from vibrant social scenes to blissfully secluded retreats.
The North Coast: Where Energy Meets Elegance
The island’s northern shores, particularly around the famous Dickenson Bay, showcase Antigua at its most dynamic. This stretch of pristine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters serves as home to some of the island’s most celebrated resorts.
Sandals Antigua stands as the crown jewel of this coastline, and experiencing its legendary all-inclusive offering is a popular choice, as it’s consistently rated among the world’s finest adults-only resorts. The property’s 11 restaurants and seven bars ensure you’ll never tire of the culinary offerings, whilst the complimentary PADI-certified scuba diving programme opens up some of the Caribbean’s most spectacular underwater worlds. The swim-up bars and beachfront dining create an atmosphere of effortless luxury that’s difficult to match.
Just along the coast, Royalton Antigua and its sister property Royalton CHIC Antigua bring a more contemporary energy to the region. The CHIC property particularly impresses with its vibrant pool parties and sophisticated nightlife scene. Perfect for couples and groups seeking that perfect blend of relaxation and revelry. The Diamond Club upgrades are genuinely worth considering, offering butler service and exclusive spaces that significantly elevate the experience.
Blue Waters Resort and Spa rounds out this northern paradise with its more intimate, boutique feel. Set within 17 acres of tropical gardens, this property offers a sophisticated alternative for those seeking luxury without the all-inclusive structure. The hillside suites offer some of the most breathtaking views I’ve encountered in the Caribbean, overlooking neighbouring St. Kitts and Nevis.
The West Coast: Tranquil Luxury and Natural Beauty
Antigua’s western shores offer a more serene experience, where the calm Caribbean Sea laps gently against expansive beaches surrounded by lush tropical gardens.
Galley Bay Resort and Spa exemplifies everything magical about this coastline. This adults-only haven stretches across three-quarters of a mile of pristine beachfront, and during my stays, you’ll be consistently impressed by the property’s commitment to creating an atmosphere of pure romance and relaxation. The Sea Grape restaurant’s beachfront setting, combined with its exceptional wine programme, creates evening dining experiences that linger long in the memory. The beachfront yoga pavilion at sunrise is simply sensational. There’s something profoundly peaceful about practising amongst the sound of gentle waves and tropical birdsong.

The East Coast: Adventure and Authenticity
The eastern shores offer perhaps Antigua’s most dramatic coastlines, where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean in spectacular fashion.
Pineapple Beach Club claims what many consider the island’s finest stretch of sand at Long Bay. This Elite Island resort captures the essence of laid-back Caribbean luxury perfectly. The famous Outhouse restaurant, perched high above the turquoise waters, serves what might be the finest barbecue in the Caribbean – the jerk chicken and ribs are absolutely legendary. The tradition of signing wooden boards to commemorate your visit creates a wonderful sense of community amongst guests.
The Verandah and Hammock Cove complete this eastern trinity, each offering its own interpretation of luxury along this spectacular coastline. The proximity to Devil’s Bridge National Park means you’re never far from one of Antigua’s most impressive natural attractions. The rock formations and crashing waves create some truly Instagram-worthy moments.
The South: Historic Charm and Sophisticated Elegance
The southern region, centred around the historic English Harbour, offers perhaps the most sophisticated and culturally rich experience on the island.
Curtain Bluff stands as Antigua’s most venerable luxury resort, timeless and elegant. A major reason why guests return generation after generation. Perched on a promontory between the calmer Caribbean Sea and the more dramatic Atlantic, every room offers spectacular ocean views. The wine cellar here is genuinely world-class, one of the finest in the entire Caribbean, and the tennis programme rivals any resort globally. The all-inclusive rate here represents exceptional value when you consider the quality of everything included.
Carlisle Bay brings contemporary luxury to this historic coastline. Set on a horseshoe bay on the southwestern shore, this property seamlessly blends modern sophistication with Caribbean warmth. The spa treatments overlooking the turquoise lagoon are absolutely sublime, and the resort’s commitment to both luxury and environmental responsibility is genuinely impressive.
St James Club sprawls across a 100-acre peninsula near English Harbour, offering one of the Caribbean’s most comprehensive resort experiences. With two distinct beaches, the calm Mamora Bay and the more energetic Coco Beach, plus six swimming pools and an impressive array of dining options, there’s genuinely something for everyone. The proximity to Nelson’s Dockyard and the famous Shirley Heights Sunday barbecue make this an ideal base for exploring Antigua’s rich maritime heritage.
The Inn at English Harbour provides the most intimate experience in this region, perfect for those seeking boutique luxury steeped in history. The property’s colonial charm, combined with its proximity to the historic dockyard, creates an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Why Antigua Captivates
What strikes me most about Antigua is its remarkable diversity within such a compact space. Whether you’re seeking the energy of Dickenson Bay’s beach bars, the tranquillity of Galley Bay’s yoga pavilions, the adventure of the eastern coastline, or the sophisticated charm of English Harbour, this island delivers experiences that cater to every possible holiday aspiration.
The local warmth is genuine; Antiguans take enormous pride in their island, and it shows in every interaction. The infrastructure is excellent, with good roads connecting all regions, and the airport is just minutes from most properties. Perhaps most importantly, each region maintains its own distinct character whilst offering world-class accommodation and dining.

When to Visit
Peak Season (December-April): Expect perfect weather with minimal rainfall, average temperatures of 25-27°C, and gentle trade winds. This is also the busiest and most expensive period.
Shoulder Season (May-June, November): Excellent weather with occasional brief showers, fewer crowds, and better value. May and June offer particularly good conditions.
Summer/Hurricane Season (July-October): Warmest temperatures (28-29°C), higher humidity, and increased rainfall. October is typically the wettest month. However, hurricanes are relatively rare, and when rain does occur, it’s often brief afternoon showers.
Sea Temperature: Consistently warm year-round, ranging from 26°C in winter to 29°C in summer. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and water sports regardless of the season.
The island’s position in the Leeward Islands means it enjoys consistent trade winds that help moderate the tropical heat, making even the warmest months comfortable for most visitors. With an average of 7-9 hours of sunshine daily year-round, Antigua truly offers that perpetual summer experience that makes the Caribbean so irresistible.
