There’s a particular kind of joy that comes from watching three generations of your own family fall in love with the same island at the same time. That’s exactly what happened when nine of us, immediate and extended family spanning grandparents to grandchildren, landed in Koh Samui for a week we’ll never stop talking about.
We based ourselves at the Bo Phut Resort and SPA in Fisherman’s Village, and honestly, it was the perfect choice. With a group our size and our age range, I was slightly nervous about finding somewhere that would work for everyone. I needn’t have worried.
A Hotel That Understood the Assignment
From the moment we arrived, the service at Bo Phut was out of this world. Nothing felt like too much trouble, whether that was arranging a taxi to the temples, sourcing extra beach towels, or simply remembering how we all took our coffee by day three. It’s the kind of attentiveness that makes a big family trip feel effortless rather than exhausting.
And then there was the spa. I’m not usually one to build a holiday around treatments, but the team at Bo Phut made a very good case for it. A couple of hours there and I genuinely felt like a different person, which, with nine of us under one roof, was occasionally very welcome.
Something for Every Generation
Fisherman’s Village itself turned out to be a brilliant base. It has real character, an easy walk along the front in the evenings, and enough choice that nobody in our group ever struggled to find something they fancied doing.
The undoubted highlight for us all was the speedboat trip out to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan. The water out there is a colour I’m not sure I’d believed existed outside of a postcard, and the crossing between the three interlocking bays at Koh Nang Yuan is one of those views that stops conversation entirely. It worked for every age in our group too, from the grandparents happy to sit back and take in the scenery to the younger ones who couldn’t wait to get in the water.
Samui Elephant Haven was another must-do, and I’d recommend it to any family without hesitation. Seeing these beautiful animals cared for in a genuinely ethical, sanctuary-style setting, rather than performing tricks, made for a morning that was as moving as it was memorable. It sparked more conversation over dinner that evening than almost anything else we did.
No trip to Koh Samui is complete without a visit to the Big Buddha and the surrounding temples, and we’d echo that entirely. There’s a stillness to the place that’s a lovely contrast to the buzz of the beach, and it gave us all a proper sense of the island’s culture beyond the resorts.
A Moment None of Us Saw Coming
And then there was the moment that turned our family holiday into a family occasion. My daughter’s long-term boyfriend chose Koh Samui to propose, and somehow kept it a complete secret from all nine of us until it happened. I still don’t know how he managed it. Watching that unfold, surrounded by the people who love her most, is a memory I’ll be replaying for years. If you’re looking for a spot to pop the question, I can now say with total confidence that this island delivers.
Exceptional Value, Every Single Day
One thing that struck all of us, across every generation, was just how good the food was and how far your money goes. Whether it was a simple beachfront curry or a proper night out, the quality was consistently excellent, and the prices were remarkable by comparison with home. Drinks were every bit as affordable, which made those long, easy evenings by the water even easier to enjoy.

Koh Samui gave us a week of sunshine, sea, spa treatments and one very unexpected proposal, but our trip didn’t end there. From the island, the nine of us headed on to Bangkok for a further three nights of an entirely different pace and energy.
