There are moments in life when you step into what feels like a living postcard, and my recent stay at Oblu Select Lobigili in the Maldives was precisely that. As I sit here reflecting on those magical days, I can hardly believe I experienced such perfection firsthand.

The moment we touched down in Malé, I knew this holiday would be different. Within five minutes of collecting our bags, the Hummingbird representative had whisked us away to their speedboat. Fifteen minutes later, we were stepping onto our slice of paradise. Dave was absolutely in his element during that exhilarating boat transfer – the anticipation building with every wave we crossed.
Our Floating Sanctuary
Our water villa with pool was nothing short of spectacular. Twice-daily housekeeping meant we returned each evening to a pristine sanctuary, with fresh bedding every other day and a fully stocked fridge daily. But the real magic happened on our private deck, where the sunset painted the sky in impossible colours whilst ocean breezes carried the sounds of paradise.
An Underwater Wonderland at Our Doorstep
The snorkelling was absolutely amazing. Right from our villa steps, we found ourselves swimming amongst thousands of beautiful fish. We regularly spotted turtles gliding gracefully through the water, and the little black tip reef sharks became familiar friends. It struck me that we didn’t need any expensive excursions – paradise was literally beneath our feet.
Service That Anticipates Every Need
Two dedicated ladies were assigned to our group, creating a WhatsApp group that became our lifeline to luxury. Whether we needed restaurant bookings, buggy transport if we didn’t fancy the 10-minute walk, or access to the sister resort, they were there instantly. The sister property offered more vibrancy and activity but came with crowds and children – perfect for variety, though we treasured returning to our tranquil side of paradise.
The bridge separating the two resorts had a charming guardian who ensured our peaceful sanctuary remained exclusive to villa guests, whilst we enjoyed complete freedom to explore both sides.
Culinary Excellence and Unexpected Indulgences
The dining experience exceeded every expectation. These were the best restaurants we’ve ever encountered anywhere in the world. The staff were exemplary, anticipating our needs before we even realised them ourselves.
Our spa experiences were divine – two massages each that transported us to a state of complete bliss. Well, Dave experienced one and a half, as he dozed off halfway through his second session! Demonstrating perfectly the relaxed state this place induced.
Weather, Wisdom, and Perfect Timing
We were blessed with ideal weather conditions, experiencing only brief tropical storms. The staff’s nonchalant response was brilliant – they simply “battened the hatches, grabbed the squeegee mops, and kept serving drinks!” Their unflappable nature reminded us that in paradise, even storms are part of the charm.
I wouldn’t recommend visiting much later in the season than we did, but our timing proved perfect. Our pool villas faced the sunset with clear ocean views and constant breezes – a significant advantage over the sunrise-facing villas without pools on the walkway’s other side, which offered less privacy and fewer marine encounters.
A Lasting Impression
This “resort” is remarkably only three years old, yet it feels timelessly elegant and impeccably maintained. Every detail has been considered, every comfort provided, every view optimised for maximum impact.
It’s impossible not to feel utterly special at Oblu Select Lobigili. The biggest wow factor imaginable awaits anyone fortunate enough to experience this slice of paradise. From the seamless transfers to the twice-daily villa service, from the incredible snorkelling to the world-class dining, every element combines to create something truly magical.
As I look back at the photos of myself beaming with joy, surrounded by infinite blue, I’m reminded that some experiences transcend mere holidays – they become treasured chapters in the story of our lives.
