There are places that capture your heart from the moment you arrive, and Rethymnon in Crete is undoubtedly one of them. Having just returned from this remarkable Grecian gem, I’m absolutely delighted to share why this destination deserves a prime spot on your travel wishlist.
A Farm-to-Table Experience Like No Other
One of the absolute highlights of my stay was an evening at the Grecotel Agreco Farm – an experience that perfectly encapsulates the authentic spirit of Crete. This isn’t just any tourist attraction; it’s a genuine working farm that supplies fresh produce to the entire Grecotel Hotel chain, and the passion behind their operation is immediately evident.
The guided tour takes you through their organic gardens and traditional facilities, where you’ll discover the secrets behind their exceptional olive oil, locally crafted wines, and artisanal cheeses. The tastings are generous and educational – you’ll genuinely learn to appreciate the subtle differences in flavour profiles whilst sampling some of the finest produce Crete has to offer.
The evening culminates with a banquet that’s nothing short of spectacular. Picture this: dining al fresco with sweeping views of the Cretan countryside rolling gently down towards the sparkling Cretan Sea to the north, part of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the sort of magical moment that makes you pause, put down your camera, and simply savour the experience.
The Enchanting Old Town: A Culinary Paradise
Rethymnon’s Old Town is an absolute treasure trove for food enthusiasts. The variety is genuinely impressive – from traditional tavernas serving hearty Cretan specialties to contemporary restaurants offering modern twists on Mediterranean classics. What struck me most was the excellent value across the board, regardless of whether you’re after a quick bite or a leisurely three-course meal.
The winding cobblestone streets reveal new culinary discoveries at every turn, and I found myself constantly amazed by the consistent quality. Local tip: don’t be afraid to venture down the smaller side streets – some of the most memorable meals are found in the unassuming family-run establishments tucked away from the main thoroughfares.
Historical Insights and Peaceful Harbours
The Fortezza of Rethymnon is undeniably worth visiting for its impressive Venetian architecture and commanding views over the town. However, I must mention that it could benefit from more comprehensive historical interpretation – the fort’s fascinating past deserves better storytelling to truly bring its significance to life.
In contrast, the old town harbour offers something entirely different: a sanctuary of calm that feels worlds away from bustling tourist areas. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely coffee or evening cocktail, watching traditional fishing boats bob gently in the crystal-clear waters.
The Perfect Base: Beach Area Bliss
I chose to stay in the beach area, approximately 20-30 minutes’ walk from the Old Town, and this decision proved absolutely brilliant. Not only did it guarantee my daily steps (always a bonus on holiday!), but the stroll itself is genuinely enjoyable, whether you take the scenic beachfront route or meander along the flat promenade dotted with inviting shops, bars, and restaurants – perfect for impromptu pit stops.
Getting About: The Tourist Bus Experience
For those keen to explore beyond walking distance, I recommend the open-top tourist bus. At just €20 per adult, it’s excellent value despite offering relatively limited stops. What it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality – providing fantastic opportunities to see both the town’s highlights and the stunning surrounding countryside from a unique perspective.
Beach Life: Golden Sands and Organised Comfort
The beach itself exceeded all expectations. Five kilometres of pristine golden sand stretch along the coast, impeccably clean and beautifully organised. The beach club system is particularly clever – complimentary sunbeds are yours for the day when you purchase food or drinks from the affiliated bars, making it both convenient and economical.
My accommodation at the Grecotel Plaza featured a spacious three-bedroom apartment with stunning sea views, and the hotel’s own complimentary beach club access was a delightful bonus. The seamless integration between accommodation and beach facilities enhances the overall experience.
Nightlife for Every Taste
One of Rethymnon’s greatest strengths is its ability to cater to different nightlife preferences. The chic bar strip offers vibrant nightlife that appeals to all ages, with energetic venues that keep the party going well into the early hours. However, if you prefer a more relaxed evening, this lively scene is easily avoided in favour of the numerous chilled bars scattered along the beachfront. These laid-back establishments provide the perfect setting for a leisurely drink whilst listening to the gentle lapping of waves – proving that Rethymnon truly offers something for everyone when the sun goes down.
The Verdict: A Destination for Everyone
After experiencing everything Rethymnon has to offer, I can confidently say I’ll absolutely be returning. This isn’t just another pretty Greek island destination – it’s a place that genuinely caters to every type of traveller and age group.
Whether you’re seeking cultural enrichment, culinary adventures, peaceful relaxation, or active exploration, Rethymnon delivers in spades. It’s the sort of destination where couples find romance, families create lasting memories, and solo travellers feel completely at ease.
